作詞作曲を手掛けるJustin Vernon（ジャスティン・ヴァーノン）は次のように言っている

「（曲の題名の）Holoceneとは地質時代の名前にも由来するけど
魂の暗い夜を過ごしたポーランドにあるバーの名前でもあるんだ」

また、こうも述べている

「この題名はうまくいかない時の比喩だが、
自分が何かに価値があるとの救いや悟りについての曲
つまり、自分は特別であると同時に特別ではないんだということ。」

参考までに、
Holoceneとは日本語で完新世。地質時代最後の世で、
約一万年前から現在までの時期を指す。
